VARANASI, Sept. 13 -- Professor Gyaneshwer Chaubey, a geneticist from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), stated that the relationship between the Indus Valley Civilisation and the Mesopotamian Civilisation was not limited to the trade of goods; there was also a genetic connection between the ancient populations of both regions. He was speaking during a lecture at the Varanasi campus of the National Forensic Science University on Friday. Prof Chaubey explained that archaeological evidence has long attested to contact between these two civilisations. References to 'Meluhha' in Mesopotamian texts, along with Indus seals and beads discovered there, confirm this trade. Now, ancient DNA analysis reveals that it was not just goods that moved along these routes, people were connected as well. He detailed a research project conducted in collaboration with Polish scientists, which involved DNA analysis of teeth from four individuals found at Tell Ashara (ancient Terqa) and Tell Masaikh (ancient Kar-Ashurnasirpal) in Syria's Middle Euphrates Valley.
