'Potato farmers have not received fair price'
Lucknow, March 24 -- Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday raised questions on the procurement of potatoes from farmers by the state government. He alleged the farmers failed to receive a fair price for their produce.
The former chief minister was speaking to reporters after garlanding the statue of socialist icon Ram Manohar Lohia on his birth anniversary at Lohia park in Lucknow.
"Potato farmers have failed to receive a fair price for their produce. Farmers in districts, including Agra, Farrukhabad, Mainpuri, Etawah, and Etah, have suffered heavy losses. The market price of potatoes is so low that farmers have not even bothered to harvest them; instead, they have ploughed their fields-potatoes and all-using tractors. The government had promised to procure potatoes from the farmers. We demand that the government disclose exactly how much budgetary allocation was made for the procurement of potatoes," he said.
He alleged that the government also engaged in false propaganda regarding investments.
"We challenge the government to reveal how much of the investment promised through various memorandums of understanding (MoUs) has actually materialized on the ground," he said.
He claimed that due to the government's flawed policies, people are constantly forced to stand in queues-whether for demonetisation, for fertilisers, or, as is the case now, for cooking gas cylinders....
