Lucknow, Sept. 17 -- Animal Husbandry minister Dharmapal Singh on Tuesday said that cases of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in cattle had been reported in 11 districts of Uttar Pradesh bordering Bihar, but the situation was under control due to intensified vaccination and treatment drives. The disease has so far been detected in approximately 9,353 animals across districts including Chandauli, Ghazipur, Ballia, Deoria, Kushinagar, Gorakhpur, Siddharthnagar, Basti, Mau, Sant Kabir Nagar and Maharajganj. Around 6,769 cattle have already recovered, while treatment is ongoing for 2,584 animals. "To contain the outbreak, the state government has administered over 61.20 lakh doses of the Goat Pox vaccine, considered effective against LSD. The Union government has also supplied 60,000 doses of a new 'Lumpi-ProVac' vaccine developed by ICAR-NRCE, Hisar and IVRI, Izatnagar, which are being deployed in the affected areas," he said. According to the minister, special focus is being given to Gorakhpur and Siddharthnagar, which share a porous border with Bihar. Vaccination is being carried out in a 10-km belt along the border districts to prevent the spread of infection. Inter-state cattle movement has also been restricted in seven border districts. "We have clamped a lockdown in seven districts bordering Bihar, to the extent that no cattle from Bihar will be allowed to enter these districts, and no cattle fairs will be held in these areas," he said. A total of 16 veterinary officers have been deployed in the affected areas, and seven mobile veterinary units are working round the clock for treatment, vaccination, and awareness campaigns. The state has also set up control rooms at both district and state levels, with a toll-free helpline (18001805414) for public information.
