LUCKNOW, Aug. 21 -- Lucknow's rich culinary heritage can help counter the growing threat posed by ultra-processed food and the rising burden of non-communicable diseases, said prof R Clive Landis, pro vice-Chancellor and principal of the University of the West Indies, Barbados, at an international academic exchange at Era University on Thursday. Referring to Lucknow's Unesco recognition as a City of Gastronomy, prof Landis urged people to retain traditional food practices instead of replacing them with industrially formulated products. He warned that ultra-processed foods, often high in sugar, fat and salt and containing several additives, could contribute to obesity, chronic inflammation and cardiovascular, metabolic and neurological problems. He also called for simple warning labels identifying ultra-processed foods, citing Brazil's experience. The academic exchange, organised by Era University with UWI and American University of Barbados, also saw the signing of an MoU among the three institutions to promote collaborative research, medical education and healthcare innovation....
