'Homegrown' experts make this camp conducive for UP cricketers
LUCKNOW, July 18 -- It's a cricket camp with a difference. Two hours of intense physical drills, gym sessions and a lot of running followed by six hours of rest. Thereafter, five hours of batting, bowling and catching training.
This is what all 40 cricketers, including seniors of Ranji Trophy, Under-23 and juniors of under-19, teams have been doing for six days at Kanpur's Green Park Stadium.
It's a new normal for Uttar Pradesh cricket under the guidance of the state's second most successful coach Gyanendra Pandey who is leaving no stone unturned to make things happen in the right direction.
"In the last such camp for a period of eight days a few months ago, I applied the old system of coaching, which was more focussed on physical fitness of players. Reason: in the longer version of the game, especially in Ranji Trophy, one needs to have good stamina and energy," said Pandey on Thursday as rain almost washed out the day's training programme.
"I am more focussed on cricketers' endurance and skills. One can't teach cricket at this level, but we can help them become strong mentally, physically and psychologically," he added.
Pandey said his priority would be to help UP cricketers do well in the upcoming domestic season. "For me, success of the team is the top-most priority and even in the past too, I did try my best to help the side do well in domestic cricket," he said.
UPCA's decision to put Pandey into action for the team's building before the start of the next domestic season has made things easy for players in the camp as now they are allowed to speak their minds and share things with the coaching staff, including batting coach and former UP Ranji Trophy keeper Mohd Aamir.
"When a player has someone of his own around, he feels like giving his best. Right now, camaraderie among players and support staff is fine, unlike in the past ," said young leg spinner Zeeshan Ansari.
"Gyanendra sir has always helped me perform. This is also the case with almost all players in the camp as he has seen everyone playing and knows about everyone's calibre," said Zeeshan, who remained the highest wicket taker last season in the UPTwenty20 League.
Besides Ansari, almost all senior cricketers, including Priyam Garg, Shivam Mavi, Kritagya singh, Vipraj Nigam, Vineet Pawar, Aquib Khan, Ajay Kumar, Vijay Kumar, Abhishek Goswami, are also part of the camp.
Besides, 'homegrown' support staff for the training of UP cricketers has happened after a long time. UP's own Rajendra Singh 'Hans' was the coach when UP lifted their maiden Ranji Trophy in 2005-06.
This was followed by a series of successes of the senior side under the guidance of Gyanendra Pandey, but thereafter, UPCA chose to have outsiders, including former India cricketer Sunil Joshi, under whose guidance, the team never did anything special in his three-season stint.
"This is the best move by the UPCA to bring its own former cricketers into the coaching set-up as homegrown professionals do everything 'dil se' - the best things for any side to overcome obstacles," said a senior official of the UPCA....
