'Driver allegedly drunk, emergency exit blocked'
LUCKNOW, Feb. 24 -- Allegations of drunk driving, overcrowding and blocked emergency exits have emerged in the fatal bus accident near the Purvanchal Expressway toll plaza. Survivors claim the driver allegedly consumed alcohol before the mishap and safety norms were ignored.
Some passengers alleged that bus driver Sompal, who fled and was later arrested, had consumed alcohol at a roadside eatery about half an hour before the accident, while others claimed he may have dozed off. Pictures from the site also showed alcohol bottles.
Passengers and officials further alleged that the emergency gate was blocked, leaving no second passage for escape.
Passenger Ranjay Kumar said, "We had eaten at a dhaba about half an hour before the bus overturned. The bus must have travelled 25 kilometres from the dhaba when it overturned. It seems the bus driver had been drinking at the dhaba. He was driving very fast after that. Our brother died in this accident."
A passenger, Radha, travelling to Nepal via Bihar from Ludhiana, claimed the bus was overcrowded.
"They charged me Rs 1,800 and there were between 150 and 200 passengers inside," she said.
An inspection by RTO found the emergency gate was allegedly covered, said ARTO (enforcement) Prabhat Pandey....
