'Chhotu' LPG cylinders to be made available against Aadhaar
PRAYAGRAJ, April 3 -- The government has announced relief for students and daily wage workers by allowing access to 5 kg LPG cylinders, popularly known as 'Chhotu', through Aadhaar verification.
According to the new directive, individuals can obtain a 5 kg cylinder connection by paying Rs.1,533, which includes a filled cylinder. Once the LPG is exhausted, it can be refilled at authorised agencies for Rs.589, shared district officials.
Sunil Singh, district supply officer (DSO), Prayagraj, confirmed receipt of the orders in this regard.
The decision comes as a major relief for Prayagraj, a city with a large population of competitive exam aspirants and migrant workers. The shortage had worsened after restrictions were imposed on smaller cylinders, severely affecting students living in hostels and lodges who rely heavily on these cylinders for daily cooking.
Mohit Mishra, operator of Triveni Gas Agency, said that fresh orders issued on Thursday instructed agencies in areas with high student and worker populations to immediately start supply of small LPG cylinders.
Those without an existing connection can avail one by simply presenting their Aadhaar cards, he added.
Localities such as Salori, Baghara, Daraganj, Allahpur, University Road, and student hostels are expected to benefit the most. Prior to this decision, black-market practices had led to inflated refill prices, with some vendors charging up to Rs.500 for just 1 kg of gas, placing a heavy burden on students and low-income workers.
In addition, gas agencies have been directed to ensure full supply of commercial cylinders to mess facilities and hospitals based on demand. Hotels and restaurants will be eligible to receive up to 20% of their required supply.
Establishments without PNG (piped natural gas) connections must submit applications through their agency and area sales manager.
Even in areas where PNG infrastructure is not yet available, applications are required to ensure future connectivity, while commercial cylinder supply will continue in the interim.
Mohit Mishra said that his agency has already distributed cylinders to 15 beneficiaries following the new orders....
