KANPUR, Aug. 15 -- The UP Special Task Force (STF) arrested an alleged interstate arms trafficker in Kanpur on Friday and recovered four .32-bore pistols and four magazines from his possession. The accused, identified as Lalit Chauhan of Kasganj district, was arrested from Larmour Bagh colony near Chetan ground in the Cantonment police area, said officials. According to the STF, it had received inputs that arms trafficking networks could become active ahead of the upcoming panchayat elections. A Kanpur field unit was subsequently tasked with gathering intelligence on such networks. Acting on information that a man would arrive in Kanpur with a consignment of illegal firearms from Khargone in Madhya Pradesh, an STF team intercepted Chauhan near the ground. During questioning, Chauhan allegedly told investigators that he had obtained the pistols from a man identified as Gurumeet Sardar in Khargone, who was involved in the illegal arms trade. A case under Section 3/25 of the Arms Act was registered at Cantonment police station. Officials said the pistols may have been purchased in Khargone for around Rs 14,000-15,000 and sold in Kanpur for up to Rs 20,000. htc...
