Valley sees more rain, mercury plunges 9 degrees below normal
Srinagar, July 17 -- : As rains continued in Kashmir for the third day, the meteorological centre in Srinagar has predicted more wet weather for the coming week.
Incessant light to moderate rains lashed Kashmir throughout the day further bringing down the temperatures in the region.
The MeT said that Srinagar recorded a rainfall of 9.1 mm during the day with maximum temperature settling at 21 degree celsius, some 9.1 degrees below normal.
The highest rainfall was recorded in the weather monitoring station of Gulmarg in north Kashmir at 17.6 mm with mercury plunging to 15 degree celsius, some 6.2 degrees below normal.
The rains and low temperatures come after Kashmir witnessed extended dry spell in May and June with high temperatures in the beginning of July breaking a 72 year old record. On July 5, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 37.4 degree Celsius - the highest in over seven decades and the third-highest ever recorded in the city.
An official of MeT said that the cloudy weather with intermittent spells of light to moderate rain/thundershower will continue on Thursday with intense heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places of J&K.
"On July 18-20, spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected at scattered to fairly widespread places," he said.
July 21 to 23 is also expected to be cloudy with intermittent spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places with intense showers at few places and heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places.
"There is a possibility of intense showers at few places with heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places of J&K during July 17 and 21-23rd,' he said.
"Flash floods at few vulnerable places with landslides, mudslides & shooting stones also expected," he said....
