Valley receives fresh snowfall, rain
Srinagar, March 11 -- Fresh rains lashed different parts of the Valley on Tuesday while few areas in the higher reaches received fresh snowfall, thus ending the prolonged dry spell in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
MeT has predicted more rains and snowfall in upper reaches.
Gurez in north Kashmir and Sonamarg-Zojila axis in central Kashmir were among the higher reaches that received overnight snowfall, while rains continued to lash the Valley's plains, including Srinagar, till morning, they said.
From past one month due to absence of western disturbances and prolonged dry spell, the Kashmir and Jammu region witnessed 60 to 65 rain deficit and led to above normal day and night temperatures, even the ski resort of Gulmarg and Pahalgam recorded higher temperatures.
The region received just 100.6 mm of precipitation against a normal of 284.9 mm during December-February 2025-26.
December saw the actual rainfall of 13 mm against the normal of 59.4 mm, which was a departure of 78%. January witnessed the actual of 73.4 mm against the normal of 95.1 mm, a departure of 23%.
While January saw some western disturbance activity preventing a total seasonal collapse, the rainfall received was still below normal and could not compensate for December's shortfall.
In February, the actual rainfall was only 14.2 mm compared to the normal of 130.4 mm, a 89 per cent deficit.
Srinagar recorded 3 mm of rain, while Gulmarg and Pahalgam recorded 0.7 and 11.6 mm of rainfall. MeT in its daily bulletin said that on March 11 and 12 the weather will remain generally cloudy with light to moderate rain/snow (higher reaches) at many places. "Few higher reaches of Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Anantnag & Kishtwar may receive moderate snowfall. From March 12 to 14, the weather will remain generally dry."
A few higher reaches of Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal and Anantnag may receive moderate snowfall, it said.
MeT has predicted temporary traffic disruption over higher reaches & important passes of Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Anantnag and Kishtwar and asked farmers to suspend farm operations for next two days....
