Srinagar, July 10 -- The school education authorities in Kashmir have ordered for a review of all the books in the classrooms and libraries of all government and private schools in the valley to check if there is any "content against the law with potential to harm national interest". The development comes days after two books were withdrawn and eight officials of the school education department were suspended over allegations that the two textbooks distributed in government school libraries "glorified" separatists. The police filed an FIR under UAPA in the case on Saturday. In a circular by Naseer Ahmad Wani, the Kashmir director of school education, earlier this week, all heads of institutions (HoIs) of government schools, private schools, and coaching institutions have been directed to conduct a comprehensive screening of all recent and old books available in their respective jurisdictions, including offices, classrooms, staffrooms and school libraries. " The purpose of this screening is to ensure that no book contains inappropriate or objectionable content. This includes material that may violate religious sentiments of any section, be it inappropriate content for students, contents against prevailing laws with the potential to harm national interest, affect educational values, and established norms," the circular said. The director said all the materials must align with the age-appropriate guidelines of the National Education Policy, 2020. During the review if any objectionable content is identified, the HoIs are asked to prepare a detailed report. The school heads have also been asked to maintain proper records of the screening, ensure strict compliance with the instructions and submit a certificate to the concerned chief education or zonal education officers. "This certificate must state that all books in the premises of the institutions have been thoroughly reviewed/screened and certify that no book containing objectionable material is present within the premises of school/office to the best of my knowledge," the circular said. In cases, where objectionable content is identified, the abstract of the same shall be also submitted to superior officer and a report, if any, must be submitted to the concerned officers till July 13. "The concerned ZEO shall scrutinise and consolidate all such reports received from schools and coaching centres, ensuring adherence with the objectives, and submit a consolidated report to the office of the concerned CEO by or before July 15, 2026," it said. The chief education officers of Kashmir Division shall, in turn, submit the certificate and reports to the office of the directorate of school education Kashmir. "Any lapse in compliance with these instructions shall be viewed seriously and will invite appropriate disciplinary action," the circular said. The circular has not gone down well with one of the opposition parties. "No offence to CM @OmarAbdullah Sahab's protest programme, but the process of 'unhistory' is unfolding every day under your own administration and authority. Where are we supposed to protest against these orders?," said PDP leader Waheed Para in a post on X....
