Medical interns warn of strike resumption for stipend hike
Srinagar, Oct. 9 -- The All India Medical Students Association's (AIMSA) J&K wing has warned that it will resume its protest if the state government fails to enhance the stipend of medical interns from Rs.12,300 a month to Rs.30,000 within five days.
The interns had suspended their strike on September 8 after getting an assurance from health and medical education minister Sakina Itoo.
On Thursday, a group of MBBS interns met Peerzada Zahoor, officer on special duty (OSD) to the health minister for the second time this week to seek an update regarding their demand. "This (stipend hike) is the commitment of the government and it will be fulfilled within days," Zahoor said.
Mohammad Akib Javed, an intern and joint secretary of the J&K wing of the All India Medical Students Association, said the interns have now decided to wait for only five more days. If a favourable order is not issued, we will begin an indefinite hunger strike to intensify our protest, he said.
"The 30-day written assurance given by the J&K government regarding the finalisation of interns' stipend issue ends today. During meetings with OSD (health), we were told that the government needs more time. The government itself committed in writing to finalise the matter within 30 days. What is stopping them from issuing the order?" he asked.
The National Conference-led government had told the legislative assembly in February that it had recommended to the finance department that the stipend be hiked to Rs.25,000 per month....
