Dharamshala, July 23 -- The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shimla, has predicted heavy showers to continue in parts of the state till July 28. The weather office has sounded a yellow alert of heavy rainfall in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur districts for July 23. A similar alert has been issued for Chamba, Kangra and Sirmaur districts for July 24. The yellow alert has also been sounded in several districts of the state again on July 25 and 26. Owing to continuous rain since midnight, a tree fell on the roof of a house in the Old Barrier area of Shimla. No loss of life was reported. MeT department officials said that thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are likely at isolated places over low hills and mid hills till July 28. Sustained winds of 30-40 kmph are also likely to prevail in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts during this period. According to IMD, light to moderate rain at most places with heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places was observed over the state. The highest rainfall of 12 cm was recorded in Mashobra Aws (dist Shimla), followed by Naina Davi (11 cm), Nangal Dam (9 cm), Malraun (8 cm), Jatton Barrage (7 cm), Kufri (7 cm), Simla (7 cm), Kahu (6 cm), Bilaspur Sadar (5 cm), Dharmshala (5 cm), Jot (5 cm), Ghaghas (4 cm), Slapper (3 cm), Kasauli (3 cm), Amb (3 cm), Palampur (3 cm), Rampur Bushar (3 cm), Dharampur (3 cm). The chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday said he would visit the rain-affected areas of Shahpur in Kangra district once weather conditions improve, while urging people to stay away from rivers, streams and seasonal nullahs as heavy monsoon rains continue across the state. "The Shahpur area of Kangra district has suffered considerable damage due to heavy rainfall. Around 19 livestock animals have been washed away and two women sustained minor injuries. Fortunately, the incident occurred during the daytime, which helped avert a major loss of human life. As soon as the weather improves, I will visit the affected area, meet the people and review the extent of the damage," hesaid. Himachal Pradesh chief secretary Kamlesh Kumar Pant on Wednesday chaired a virtual high-level review meeting with all deputy commissioners to assess the prevailing monsoon situation in the state and directed district administrations to remain on the highest level of alert in view of heavy rainfall and related disasters....
