Doda limps back to normalcy, NH 244 partially restored
Jammu, July 9 -- Battered by flash floods during the intervening night of July 6 and 7, Thathri town of Doda has started limping back to normalcy with the administration expediting efforts to restore essential supplies, said officials.
Officials informed that stretch of NH-244 which was blocked due to landslide has been restored for single lane movement.
"Last evening, affected stretch of NH244 was restored partially for single lane traffic movement. Similarly, power supply too was restored to Thathri town, except two power stations," Thathrti sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Sheetal Sharma said.
"We hope to permanently restore the water supplies by Thursday evening. For now water tankers have been pressed into service as a stop gap arrangement to meet the situation," the SDM added.
The SDM, however, said that there was no confirmation about three to four vehicles having been swept away into Chenab River that night.
During the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, flashfloods triggered by heavy rainfall struck the upper reaches of Thathri town burying cars and forcing mud, rocks, and debris down onto commercial and residential areas.
According to a preliminary official assessment by Thathri tehsildar Satish Rana, at least 10 houses and 25 shops sustained substantial damage from the sliding mud and debris.

On Tuesday, identical landslide was reported at under-construction 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Power Project in Kishtwar district. Developed by Chenab Valley Power Projects Limited (CVPPL) along the Chenab river, that incident buried several utility vehicles and damaged parts of the highway, though there was no casualty.
IMD has predicted more rains till July 12."Light to moderate rain and thundershowers at scattered places with brief intense heavy showers at few places are expected across Jammu division on Thursday and Friday.
On Saturday and Sunday, one or two spells of rain, and thundershower at many places with heavy rain and brief intense heavy showers at isolated places of Jammu division are anticipated," said an IMD official.
Meanwhile, the authorities at 900 MW Baglihar hydro-electric project and 690 MW Salal hydroelectric project over Chenab River have opened three spill gates each of the two dams.
