BJP suspends Pulwama dist chief after police books him for extortion
Srinagar, Aug. 12 -- The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday suspended its Pulwama district president, Showkat Gayoor, after police booked him for alleged extortion and criminal intimidation of a contractor.
The information was shared by BJP state secretary Anwar Khan.
"Disciplinary proceedings are hereby initiated against Er Showkat Gayoor Andrabi,district president, BJP Pulwama, in view of an FIRalleging extortion registered against him," BJP state secretary Anwar Khan said in a letter.
He said pending inquiry, Gayoor has been suspended from all organisational posts and responsibilities of the BJP, including the post of district president, BJP Pulwama, with immediate effect.
The police had registered a case against Gayoor on the complaint of a local contractor who, despite having valid documents from authorities for soil extraction, was allegedly asked by Gayoor for a bribe of Rs.5 lakh.
The contractor alleged that the district president even threatened to slap the draconian Public Safety Act on the workers of the contractor and that the BJP district president was demanding a bribe to allow the work to continue unhindered.
On the basis of the complaint, police registered acase and started an investigation....
