Jammu, Sept. 18 -- Security forces shot dead two terrorists affiliated with Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) during an overnight encounter in the high-altitude forests of Udhampur's Majalta area. Firearms and explosives were seized. A suspected overground worker (OGW), believed to have provided logistical support, including food and shelter, to the slain terrorists, has been detained, officials said. While security forces have not disclosed the identity of the alleged terror operative, he had been on their radar for more than a week. "The two neutralised Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists have been identified as Saddam and Mustafa. An AK assault rifle (with four magazines), an M4 carbine (with three magazines), a Glock pistol (with two magazines) and four grenades have been recovered from their possession," the Jammu and Kashmir Police stated on X, formerly Twitter. Security personnel had been tracking a terrorist group in the dense forested belt following suspicious movements reported last week. Acting on fresh intelligence inputs, joint teams from the Army's White Knight Corps, the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched Operation Sohan around 9 pm on Wednesday, cordoning off the remote Brattal Sohan and Khubban areas of Majalta, bordering Kathua district. Despite hostile weather, incessant rain, rugged terrain and low visibility, security forces established initial contact shortly after nightfall. After intermittent firing and blasts overnight, the lull ended on Thursday morning when the trapped terrorists opened heavy fire in a bid to breach the cordon. The forces retaliated using RPGs, neutralising both terrorists before recovering their bodies along with assault rifles and ammunition. Reinforcements have been deployed, and surveillance operations remain underway to track any remaining threats. The strike follows recent anti-terror operations in the region, including the September 5 elimination of Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Yasir in Budgam and the September 15 busting of an LeT module in the Pir Panjal region, where three operatives were arrested alongside a powerful IED. The counter-terrorism operation comes just days ahead of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly's autumn session, scheduled to begin on September 21. This was the second major encounter in Udhampur district this year. In February, two Pakistani terrorists, including a self-styled commander, Rubani alias Abu Mavia, were killed in the Ramnagar forests. Over the past several years, the difficult mountain terrain of the Kathua-Udhampur-Doda belt has been used by JeM terrorists to establish hideouts and evade security forces after infiltrating from across the border.
