Women's empowerment just a slogan for Oppn: CM
Jaipur, April 20 -- Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Sunday accused the Opposition parties of making April 17 a "black day" in the history of the Parliament by rejecting the Constitutional Amendment Bill to expand the size of Lok Sabha which could also have fast tracked the 33% reservation for the women in parliament.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters in Jaipur, he said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought this bill to pave the way for increasing women's representation. Congress has never thought about it. Prioritising the women is also a crucial part of our culture. But opposition parties, with their negative mindset, refused to support this bill and proved April 17 as a black day in the history."
He further accused the opposition of preferring their own political interests over the welfare of the country.
"They can't see anything keeping their political interest aside. They have destroyed the dreams of our women while our PM has always talked about only four communities in this country - women, youth, farmers, and labourers. Since his induction to power in 2014, he implemented several schemes such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, special scheme to build toilets under Swachh Bharat, Ujjwala scheme, and Lakhpati Didi targeting women and their development. But all the parties such as TMC, Congress, DMK, SP defeated the women today and finished all their expectations," he said.
CM said that all the opposition parties prefer nepotism.
"They don't care about any eligible person and so they don't even want the eligible women to come forward and join the politics. All the parties under the INDIA alliance plotted a conspiracy against the women and destroyed their democratic right," Sharma added.
The CM accused the Congress of using women only as their "vote bank" and that they never had any honest intention to work for their development.
"We have known their approach during Saira Bano's case to ban triple talaq. They never think about the national interest. It is their habit. However, our women will never forget their behaviour. They will never forgive them for this betrayal. Our women forget everything but their insult. They will give them a suitable answer at a right time," he said.
He said the Centre had brought the Constitution Amendment Bill, 2026, along with the Delimitation Bill and amendments related to Union Territories, to ensure greater representation for women in legislative bodies.
"If this bill had been passed, our mothers and sisters would have received 33 per cent reservation in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies from the 2029 general elections," he said.
Accusing the opposition of spreading misinformation, Sharma asserted that the opposition created confusion regarding delimitation, especially about southern states, whereas the process would have ensured fair representation for all.
However, he vowed that the BJP and the NDA will continue their fight for women. "Our party is also relentlessly working for development of the women in Rajasthan. It is the habit of the Congress to oppose everything that can be good for the country. Their approach was so dubious during Operation Sindoor as well. Our struggle will continue to implement what we started"....
