Woman gives birth outside Bikaner PHC; 6 staff shunted
BIKANER, March 6 -- A pregnant woman allegedly delivered her baby outside the locked gate of a Primary health centre (PHC) in Bhadla village under the Nokha sub- division area of Bikaner district on Wednesday, triggering outrage among villagers.
According to family members, the woman was brought to the PHC around 1 pm after she developed severe labour pain.
They alleged that the main gate of the hospital was locked and no doctor or nursing staff were present when they arrived.
As the woman's condition worsened, women accompanying her created a temporary screen using clothes and helped her deliver the baby outside the hospital gate, official said.
The family members claimed that they waited for nearly 30 minutes before a doctor associated with the PHC arrived from a nearby village.
The mother and the new-born were later taken inside the hospital and admitted for observation.
The incident led to protests by villagers, who gathered outside the PHC and demanded strict action against the staff for alleged negligence.
Bikaner chief medical and health officer (CMHO) Dr Pukhraj Saadh said the health department has taken serious note of the incident.
"We have initiated an inquiry into the matter and suspended six health workers, including the in-charge doctor who was allegedly absent from duty at the time of the incident- he said, adding that further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry," the CMHO Dr Saadh said.
Meanwhile, Dr Govind Gedhar, who was the PHC in-charge denied allegations of negligence.
He said the woman delivered before the OPD hours began and maintained that the staff was on call.
He added that both the mother and the new-born are safe and currently admitted at the hospital....
