Udaipur, Sept. 1 -- A local court in Udaipur on Friday sentenced a man to death for killing his 23-year-old wife by setting her on fire in 2027. The court termed the killing as "diabolical, premeditated, and falling in the rarest of rare category," and observed that no punishment less than the death penalty would meet the ends of justice. The case pertains to Kishanlal alias Kishandas, a resident of Nawanaya village in Vallabhnagar, who used to often humiliate his wife Laxmi Kumari Vaishnav for being "dark and overweight", stated the FIR, registered on the basis of the complaint filed by the victim. "On the night of June 24, 2017, he brought a "brown chemical liquid" in a bottle and told her that was a fairness solution and asked her to apply it on her body. He then lit an incense stick and pressed it against her stomach. When flames engulfed her body, instead of dousing them, Kishanlal allegedly poured more of the chemical, causing severe burns," it said. "Hearing her screams, relatives rushed in and extinguished the fire with water. Laxmi was taken first to a private hospital and later shifted to Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital, Udaipur, where she succumbed to her injuries after giving statements," it said. According to the Mavli Sessions Court judgement, "Laxmi's two dying declarations given on On June 25, 2017, proved decisive in the case. First statement (7:30 am) was given to Vallabhnagar Police wherein she narrated how her husband burned her after taunting her appearance. The second statement was given at (3:10 pm)." "Recorded by Tehsildar and Executive Magistrate, Badgaon, she reaffirmed the same account. Doctors certified her mental fitness while recording both statements. In both testimonies, she stated that Kishanlal refused to take her to the hospital despite her begging for help," it stated.
