Toddler succumbs day after 6 of her family killed in Bikaner crash
BIKANER, June 17 -- The death of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl at PBM Hospital on Tuesday took the toll in Monday's devastating road accident near Sri Dungargarh to seven, bringing fresh attention to the Jaipur Road highway corridor where 175 people have lost their lives in road accidents during the last 18 months, according to official road safety records.
Tanvi succumbed to injuries sustained when the car in which she was travelling with family members collided with an empty dumper near Sijral Hotel, close to Hemasar village on National Highway-11. Six members of her family had died on the spot on Monday.
The victims were identified as Om Prakash Suthar (60), a retired accountant from Matana village in Haryana's Fatehabad district, his wife Sorma Devi (55), daughter Pramila (30), granddaughters Yashvi (10), Khushi (8) and Tanvi, and grandson Ronit (4).
The family was returning after paying obeisance at Mukam when the accident occurred.
The impact crushed the car, forcing rescuers to cut through the mangled vehicle to retrieve the bodies. Police have detained the dumper driver and initiated an investigation.
The latest tragedy has once again highlighted safety concerns on the Jaipur Road corridor. Official records show that 175 people have died in various road accidents on the route during the last one-and-a-half years.
The Hemasar-Kitasar belt near Sri Dungargarh, where Monday's accident occurred, has repeatedly witnessed fatal crashes.
Data from the Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) reviewed by HT shows that the 500-metre accident cluster near Sijral Hotel had already recorded six accidents claiming eight lives during 2023-25,
even before Monday's crash. With seven additional deaths now linked to the location, the site has come under increased scrutiny from road safety authorities.
District Collector Nishant Jain told HT that he had convened a meeting of the district road safety committee soon after assuming charge and directed concerned departments to ensure compliance with earlier recommendations and suggestions immediately.
Following the latest accident, the administration has ordered a detailed survey of the site to assess any improvement required and whether it should be declared a black spot.
"We will take all possible measures to improve safety and prevent accidents on highways across Bikaner district," Jain said.
The latest accident has also revived concerns over infrastructure constraints on the corridor. While the road remains four-lane from Haldiram Pyau to the Bikaner bypass, the stretch beyond towards Fatehpur continues as a two-lane highway....
