Bharatpur, Aug. 7 -- Students of a government Sanskrit school in Bharatpur district locked the main entrance of their school and staged a protest demanding the appointment of more teachers, officials said on Thursday. The protest took place on Wednesday at the Government Senior Upadhyaya Sanskrit Secondary School in Saidpura village under the Uchchain panchayat samiti, where students alleged that a severe shortage of teachers has been affecting their studies. The school has an enrolment of 710 students but only 14 teachers against a sanctioned strength of 23. The institution has also been functioning without a principal for a long time. The students said they had held a similar protest in July last year after officials assured them that vacant teaching posts would be filled. However, no appointments have been made so far. "The shortage of teachers is affecting our education. We have repeatedly demanded that the government appoint teachers in our school," a student said. Vishnu Kumar, senior deputy Inspector, Sanskrit Education, Bharatpur, said the school earlier had 17 staff members, but three teachers were transferred. "The school will be provided teachers after the new recruitment process. We have already written to the Directorate of Sanskrit Education seeking appointments for the vacant posts," Kumar said. He added that officials had persuaded the students and villagers to end their protest and assured them that teachers would be posted once the recruitment process is completed....
