Jaipur, Aug. 9 -- Doctors at the surgery department of Sawai Man Singh Hospital have successfully operated on a rare and life-threatening case of transvaginal evisceration of the bowel on Saturday, in which a portion of the intestine had protruded through the vaginal canal, people familiar with the matter said. According to doctors, nearly half a metre of the patient's intestine had remained outside through the vaginal passage for around 10 days before she was brought for treatment. Transvaginal evisceration is an extremely rare and serious condition in which the abdominal bowel protrudes through the vagina. It requires immediate surgical management as the blood supply to the protruding intestine can become compromised, potentially leading to tissue damage and other serious complications. The surgical team carefully repositioned the protruding bowel through the vaginal route, assessed its condition and carried out the required surgical procedure. The challenging operation was led by senior professor and surgeon Dr Bhupen Songra. Dr Rohit Gupta, Dr Ved Prakash, Dr Rahul, Dr Ayush, Dr Manish and Dr Akash were part of the surgical team. The anaesthesia team, led by Dr Sushil Bhati, Dr Sunil Chauhan and Dr Indu Verma, also played an important role in the procedure. Doctors said the major challenges in such cases include immediately assessing the patient, determining the viability of the protruding bowel and safely returning it to the abdominal cavity.
