SMS hosp ignored fire hazard concerns
Jaipur, Oct. 8 -- On July 30, 2025, Haipur's Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital's trauma centre official had alerted the hospital and health authorities about water leakage, faulty wiring and poor building infrastructure at the intensive care unit, where eight persons died in a deadly fire on Sunday night.
Since then, four more letters were written mostly to the hospital superintendent Dr Sushil Bhati, who was suspended on Monday, highlighting the danger of running the ICU in such conditions, but no action was taken. Of the five, four letters were written by the sacked nodal officer of the trauma centre, Dr Anurag Dhakad and one by the nursing superintendent.
On October 3, Dhakad wrote to Bhati seeking action over the ongoing construction work at the roof of the operation theatre of the trauma centre.
"A neuro operation theatre is being constructed at the roof of the trauma centre whose debris may cause damage to the VRV system, electric panel, and doc machines installed at the trauma centre. We urge the authority to direct the constructors to take necessary steps so that they are not damaged," read the letter, a copy of which was seen by HT.
This came only two days after the nursing superintendent Lal took up the matter with Dhakad in a letter on October 1 in view of the 'welfare of the patients'.
In another letter on September 9, Dhakad also sought action regarding dripping water from the damped wall of the trauma centre's OT which may lead to 'short circuit' in the wards.
"Due to the construction work at the roof, water is leaking from the damped walls of the OT. It could be dangerous as this dripping water is often coming in contact with the electric panels across the OT and the connected wards resulting in electric sparks. It will completely be the responsibility of the construction and engineering department if any patient gets hurt," the letter read.
On July 30, the nursing superintendent and head of the department of neurosurgery also wrote to Dhakad to repair a damaged false ceiling of the ICU 203 "which may collapse anytime causing damage to the patients."
However, no action was yet taken in any of these cases, as officials from the trauma centre said.
"The electric panel of the OT was also connected to the ICU which caught fire on Sunday night due to a short circuit. The water leakage issue and damps were also visible in that ICU. Had the action been taken timely, this short circuit could have been avoided," said an engineer who has the charge of the OT.
At least six patients died due to suffocation after a massive fire broke out at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sawai Man Singh Hospital's trauma centre in Jaipur late on Sunday night, officials said on Monday, adding that the hospital superintendent and the nodal officer of the trauma centre have been removed from their posts.
Two more patients at the hospital were also suspected to have died due to suffocation during their treatment on Monday morning, however, an official confirmation was awaited.
Following a direction from the health minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar, SMS Hospital superintendent Dr Sushil Bhati and nodal officer of the trauma centre Dr Anurag Dharkad were removed from their posts. Executive engineer of the hospital Mukesh Singhal was also suspended, officials said.
Khimsar also directed the suspension of contract with the SK Electric Company, which provides fire safety measures in the hospital and ordered an FIR against the company.
Meanwhile, an inspection at the SMS hospital a day after the fire revealed multiple damp walls, exposed wiring, and other safety hazards, currently undergoing a slow and resigned process of repair in the wake of the tragedy....
