Sharma launches TOPS to prep athletes for Olympics
Jaipur, Oct. 7 -- The Rajasthan government has launched Rajasthan Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) to prepare the state's athletes for Olympic Games, chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma said on Tuesday, underlining the government's focus on developing sports infrastructure and nurturing young talent.
Addressing the closing ceremony of the 51st Sub-Junior and Junior National Yogasana Sports Championship at Alankar PG College, Sharma said the state was working to provide better sporting infrastructure and opportunities to young athletes so that Rajasthan could emerge as a leading sporting state in the country and globally.
"The youth are the future of the country. Their energy will help us achieve the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047," Sharma said.
He said 17 new Khelo India centres were being started in Rajasthan, while grants totalling Rs.40.12 crore had been sanctioned for 1,786 athletes. The government has also issued the Rajasthan Youth Policy-2025, he said, adding that the state was developing sports grounds in every panchayat and establishing Atal Gyan Kendras in villages, equipped with facilities such as online classes and e-libraries, to provide young people with better educational opportunities.
Highlighting the government's employment initiatives, Sharma said 1.93 lakh appointments had been made so far, while recruitment for 1.18 lakh posts was underway. A recruitment calendar covering more than 1.25 lakh posts had also been issued, he said.
The government provided employment to five lakh youths in private sector, while a centre offering training in languages of five countries had been started in Jaipur to help young people seeking jobs abroad, he said.
Sharma described yoga as an invaluable legacy of India's ancient culture and said it had taught the world the art of living a healthy, disciplined and balanced life. He appealed to people to give up addiction and make yoga part of their daily routine.
He said yoga played an important role in improving concentration, strengthening decision-making abilities and bringing positivity into life. At a time when changing lifestyles and health challenges were affecting people across the world, yoga was among simplest and most effective ways of maintaining a healthy mind and body, he said.
Sharma also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts and global diplomacy for the United Nations' decision to observe June 21 as International Yoga Day every year.
Yoga, meditation and pranayama had now become part of the daily routines of millions of people worldwide, he said.
At the event, the CM presented trophies to West Bengal, Haryana and Maharashtra for securing the first, second and third positions respectively in the yogasana championship. The Rajasthan team also presented a musical yogasana performance....
