Seven booked for beating priest up, abusing him with caste slurs
Bhilwara, July 18 -- Police in Bhilwara district have begun an investigation into the allegedly repeated assaults of a priest belonging to a Scheduled Caste background in Barana village, officers said on Friday.
The accused were identified as Ramprasad Vaishnav, Govind Vaishnav, Bhagwan Vaishnav, Ratan Vaishnav, Shambhu Jat and Naurat Vaishnav and Sampat Jat, said Asind SHO Shraddha Pachauri. The incident occurred on Thursday, she said.
The victim, Vishnu Meghvanshi, serves as a priest at the Khakhuldev Temple, she said, adding that Meghvanshi's wife filed a complaint alleging that her husband was assaulted and harrassed with caste-based slurs while at the temple for his daily duties.
She alleged that a similar incident had occurred in August last year.
She claimed that her husband's family has served as priests at the temple for four to five generations, but the accused were allegedly trying to remove them after temple offerings increased.
Pachauri said complaints have been filed by both sides, and cases have been registered. The case against the accused was registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, she added....
