New Delhi, Sept. 9 -- The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday filed a charge sheet against the US national, Mathew Aaron VanDyke, and six Ukrainians, who were arrested earlier this year for allegedly training ethnic militias in Myanmar, but dropped the stringent terror charges under the unlawful activities prevention act or UAPA, people familiar with the development said. They have been charged under sections 21 and 23 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, which deal with illegal entry and violation of visa conditions related provisions. "We have filed a charge sheet against seven accused under the immigration and foreigners act. The probe has been kept open in all other aspects, including the UAPA charges," Rahul Tyagi, NIA's special public prosecutor told HT. VanDyke was arrested at Kolkata airport in March, while the six Ukrainians -- Hurba Petro, Taras Slyviak, Ivan Sukmanovskyi, Marian Stefankiv, Maksim Honcharuk and Viktor Kaminskyi -- were arrested at airports in Delhi and Lucknow. They are currently lodged in Tihar jail. NIA had alleged that the seven used Indian tourist visas to enter Myanmar illegally through Mizoram on more than one occasion and train ethnic armed groups (EAGs) in drone warfare, drone operations, assembly and jamming technology. The agency also alleged large consignments of drones were imported from Europe.
