Jaipur, Oct. 8 -- The Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission (RSHRC) has taken cognizance of multiple serious incidents at Jaipur's renowned Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital, highlighting systemic negligence and lapses in patient safety in an order delivered on Tuesday.
Justice GR Mulchandani on Tuesday emphasized that hospital authorities have a legal and moral duty to provide a safe, fear-free environment for patients and their families, ensuring that hospital infrastructure, equipment, and fire safety systems prevent accidents or fatalities.
The commission flagged several past occurrences at SMS Hospital, including the recent ICU trauma center fire on October 5 that claimed at least sixlives, in addition to the deaths caused by substandard cough syrup, and the unauthorized removal of a deceased 10-year-old patient's eyes.
These incidents, the order states, form distinct evidence of administrative apathy and failure to maintain patient safety standards at the hospital
The RSHRC directed SMS Hospital's superintendent, principal, Chief Medical Secretary of Rajasthan, Jaipur District Magistrate, Jaipur Police Commissioner, and CMHOs to submit detailed, point-wise reports on each incident.
The commission also instructed the hospital administration to immediately review safety measures, ensure proper maintenance of fire safety systems, and guarantee that the entire hospital premises remain safe for patients and families.
Compliance reports are to be presented by the officials concerned before the commission by October 27, 2025.
