Bikaner, Aug. 30 -- A group of 15 to 20 men allegedly attacked a police team with sticks and iron rods and forcibly freed a repeat offender from its custody in Sherera village of Bikaner district, police said on Saturday. The incident occurred under the Napasar police station area on August 27. The attackers also allegedly snatched the mobile phone of a constable who was recording the assault. Napasar SHO Kavita Poonia told HT that Modaram Jat, a habitual offender, was wanted in a case and had been absconding for several months. Acting on a tip-off, police apprehended him at his house in Sherera and were taking him to the village police outpost for further proceedings when his family members and associates surrounded the team, she said. According to Poonia, the group arrived in an unregistered camper vehicle, a Thar and on motorcycles. The attackers allegedly assaulted constables Ramdayal and Hiralal with sticks and iron rods. Ramdayal suffered a serious back injury, while Hiralal sustained a head injury. When Hiralal attempted to record the incident on his mobile phone, the attackers allegedly snatched it from him. The group then freed Modaram from police custody, bundled him into a vehicle and fled. The policemen gave chase, but the attackers escaped through unpaved tracks in nearby fields. Police registered a case at Napasar police station on Friday under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Modaram Jat, Rakesh Jat, Bhairaram Jat, Chainaram Jat, Durgaram Jat and Jeetram Jat, along with several others, have been named as accused. Special teams have been formed to trace the accused, and one person has been detained in connection with the case, police said....
