Record-holding endurance runner's 'Run Across India' bid reaches hometown Ajmer
Ajmer, June 30 -- Five-time world record holder and ultra-endurance runner Sufiya Sufi (40) on Monday reached her hometown of Ajmer after covering nearly 2,900 km as part of her ambitious 'Run Across India - Kanyakumari to Karakoram' expedition. She is now on course to complete a 5,000-km journey that could earn her a sixth world record.
The expedition began on May 12, 2026, from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and is scheduledto end at the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh. According to Sufiya, the run, which spans the length of the country, symbolises endurance, courage, discipline and resilience.
Through the initiative, she aims to inspire young people to dream big, stay disciplined and persevere in the pursuit of their goals. The expedition carries the message of "Run for Dreams." .
Sufiya, who is now settled at her marital home in Haryanas Sonipat, is among India's most accomplished ultra-endurance athletes. Over the past 48 days, she has crossed difficult terrain in extreme heat, changing weather conditions.
The run is also dedicated to the personnel of the Indian Armed Forces.
Sufiya said the journey is a tribute to soldiers who sacrifice their own dreams, comfort and time with their families so that millions of Indians can live in peace and pursue their aspirations. Completing the expedition at Karakoram, she says, will honour their service and sacrifice.
Sufiya has previously set world records through several remarkable endurance runs, including the Kashmir-to-Kanyakumari challenge, the Golden Quadrilateral Road Run, the Manali-Leh high-altitude route, Run Across Qatar, the Siachen Base Camp-to-Kargil War Memorial run and the Galwan-to-Kargil War Memorial run.
In 2019, she completed a 4,000-km run in 87 days to set a world record. This time, she is aiming to surpass her own feat by completing the distance in just 67 days.
Before taking up ultra-running professionally, Sufiya worked for a private airline and regularly participated in marathon events. Her growing passion for long-distance running eventually led her to leave her job and dedicate herself entirely to the sport.
Reflecting on her journey, Sufiya said, "Every kilometre reminds me that dreams are achieved one step at a time. This run is dedicated to every young dreamer and every brave soldier who sacrifices their dreams so that ours can live."...
