Jaipur, Aug. 28 -- Rural women in Rajasthan spend nearly 11 times as much time as men on unpaid domestic services, while also getting less time for leisure and self-care, according to data provided by the Centre in a Lok Sabha reply to a question by Tonk-Sawai Madhopur MP Harish Chandra Meena. The figures are based on the Time Use Survey (TUS) 2024 conducted by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI), which measures the time spent by people on paid and unpaid activities. Women in rural Rajasthan spend an average of 206 minutes a day, three hours and 26 minutes, on unpaid domestic services for household members, against just 19 minutes for rural men. The gender gap stands at 187 minutes, or more than three hours every day, with women spending about 10.8 times as much time on such work as men. Rural Rajasthan women, however, spend 32 minutes less on domestic work than the national rural female average of 238 minutes. Caregiving adds to this disparity. Rural women spend another 42 minutes a day on unpaid caregiving services, compared with 13 minutes for men and 47 minutes for rural women nationally. Combined, domestic work and caregiving take 248 minutes, four hours and eight minutes, of a rural Rajasthan woman's average day, against 32 minutes for men. The gender divide is also visible in leisure. Rural Rajasthan women spend 115 minutes a day on culture, leisure, mass media and sports, 43 minutes less than the 158 minutes recorded for rural men. They are also behind rural women nationally, who spend 137 minutes on these activities, 22 minutes, or about 16%, more than women in rural Rajasthan. Women also record slightly less time for self-care and maintenance, a category that includes sleep. Rural Rajasthan women spend 703 minutes, or 11 hours and 43 minutes, a day on such activities, compared with 711 minutes for rural men. The figure is also four minutes below the national rural female average of 707 minutes. The pattern reverses sharply in the production of goods for own final use. Rural Rajasthan women spend 76 minutes a day on this activity, nearly twice the 39 minutes recorded for men. Compared with rural women nationally, the difference is even wider: the all-India average is only 29 minutes. Rajasthan's rural women therefore spend 47 minutes more, or about 2.6 times the national rural female average, on own-use production. Employment presents the opposite gender pattern. Rural Rajasthan women spend 78 minutes a day on employment and related activities, compared with 243 minutes for men, a gap of 165 minutes, or two hours and 45 minutes. However, their employment time is eight minutes higher than the national rural female average of 70 minutes. On socialising, communication, community participation and religious practices, rural Rajasthan women spend 134 minutes daily, 16 minutes less than rural men at 150 minutes but seven minutes more than the national rural female average of 127 minutes. For learning, Rajasthan's rural women and rural women nationally both record 84 minutes a day, while rural Rajasthan men spend 104 minutes. The data, however, have an important limitation. Meena had specifically sought information on unpaid agricultural and allied work by rural women, including animal husbandry and fodder collection. The ministry said the TUS does not separately capture such unpaid labour in the manner sought and that state- and district-level disaggregated data on this indicator are not generated....
