Raj rolls out credit scheme for climate-smart farming
Jaipur, March 9 -- The Rajasthan Agriculture Department is set to launch an Agricultural Land Management Carbon Project in the state, aimed at promoting climate-resilient farming practices and enabling farmers to earn carbon credits through sustainable agricultural interventions.
Agriculture minister Kirodi Lal Meena said the initiative positions Rajasthan among the leading states in adopting carbon credit-based agricultural practices. The department has signed an agreement with IORA Ecological Solution Private Limited, marking a significant step towards promoting carbon finance among farmers.
The minister said farmers are already engaged in carbon-reducing activities such as plantation drives, micro-irrigation, construction of farm ponds, and installation of solar pumps. These interventions help lower carbon emissions and make farmers eligible to earn carbon finance.
To facilitate easier access to carbon finance under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme 2023, the state government has launched the project as a pilot in selected blocks. The pilot will be implemented in Bansur block of Kotputli-Behror, Mahuwa block of Dausa, and Malpura block of Tonk. Initially rolled out in three blocks, the project will soon be expanded across the state, aiming to enhance farmers' income.
Under the project, farmers adopting scientific fertiliser management, improved irrigation efficiency, soil carbon enhancement, crop residue management, plantation, and rotational grazing will receive a fixed per-hectare payment based on the reduction in carbon emissions achieved.
The carbon credit system is an economic and environmental mechanism designed to mitigate climate change by controlling and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide. Rapid industrialisation, transportation, and energy production have led to large-scale carbon dioxide emissions, a major contributor to global warming and climate change.
At the international level, the carbon credit framework allows countries and companies to emit carbon within prescribed limits. Entities that reduce emissions below the permitted threshold earn carbon credits, which can be traded or sold to others exceeding their limits....
