Raj ranked 2 in reported crimes against STs in '24
Jaipur, May 10 -- Rajasthan recorded the second- highest number of crimes against people from Scheduled Tribes communities in the country reported in 2024 and ranked fourth in reported atrocities against people from Scheduled Caste communities during the same year, the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB)'s latest report has revealed.
Rajasthan reported 2,282 cases, second only to Madhya Pradesh with 3,165 reported cases of atrocities against scheduled tribes, showed the NCRB data. Other states that followed Rajasthan were Maharashtra with 830 reported cases, Telangana with 658 reported cases, and Odisha with 599 reported cases.
The corresponding figure for 2023 was 2,343 reported cases, when the state ranked third after Manipur and Madhya Pradesh, There were also at least 2,521 cases reported in 2022 and 2,121 reported in 2021, showed earlier reports.
A further classification showed that murders of at least 23 tribal people were reported in the state in 2024, while 28 attempted murder cases were reported, in addition to 908 cases of assault.Regarding crimes against women and children, the state reported 106 cases of rapes of tribal women and 30 cases of rapes of tribal minors, showed the data.
The corresponding figures for 2023 were at least 140 rape cases with women victims reported and 3 rape cases with minor victims.
On the other hand, at least 69 were kidnapped while 9 tribal children went missing, the highest in the country that year.
The latest data also showed that around 697 cases reported in 2024 were pending for an investigation and 1,105 cases were found false. Rajasthan also recorded the lowest number of charge sheets filed in cases of atrocities against the tribal communities, with charge sheets submitted in only 42% of all cases. This placed the state only after Assam, which recorded charge sheets being filed in only 25% of all cases reported in the state in 2024.
Meanwhile, , Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of crimes against members of SC communities in 2024 with 14,642 cases, followed by 7,765 reported in Madhya Pradesh, 7,549 in Bihar, 7,008 in Rajasthan, and 3,219 in Maharashtra.
However, Rajasthan has improved its conviction rate in crimes against SC communities, with a 36.9%% conviction rate in 2024, the lowest in a decade.
Of 8,449 cases reported in Rajasthan in 2023, the report showed that around 38 cases were of voluntarily causing hurt, 77 were of murder, 108 were of attempted murder, in addition to 212 abduction cases, 34 arson cases and 1082 cases regarding attempts to insult, or intimidate with an intent to humiliate.
108 Dalit minors and 582 women also lodged complaints of rape in 2024 in Rajasthan, showed the data.
The NCRB data also stated that around 52% of the total cases were found false at the end of the investigation- the figure is the highest among the states in the country....
