Protests over death of inmate in central jail
Bharatpur, Aug. 11 -- Family members along with villagers staged a sit-in protest and blocked a national highway after the death of an inmate in jail on Sunday in Bharatpur.
The incident occurred in central jail, Sewar, when a 43-year-old inmate Chetram Jatav, resident of village Uncha under Sewar police station's condition deteriorated.
He was taken to district Raj Bahadur Memorial hospital where doctors declared him dead.
On being informed, family members and villagers gathered at the jail entrance and started to protest, shouting slogans against the jail administration.
Virendra Jatav, brother of the deceased said that his sister met him in jail on Saturday to tie Rakhi on the occasion of Rakshabandhan where he told her that he is being beaten in jail.
"He was happy and in good health, but the jail administration didn't inform us about his death," Virendra Jatav said.
Praveen Singh, a villager, said that the jail administration is responsible for the death of Jatav. "We have blocked the national highway and will continue to protest. Compensation should be given to the victim's family members and there should be proper investigation over such incidents."
Pankaj Yadav, city circle officer, said that Chetram Jatav was earlier arrested by the police for selling illegal liquor in 2018. "He came out on bail but the court issued a warrant for his arrest when he didn't appear for a hearing before the court. He was sent to jail on July 7 after he surrendered himself in court."
Police will investigate and will consider action if anyone is found guilty, Yadav said, adding that a post-mortem will be conducted. "Compensation will be given to the victim's family and a transparent investigation will be conducted", police said....
