protecting the ozone layer a duty of all, not just scientists: addl chief secy
Jaipur, Sept. 17 -- Additional chief secretary, forest, environment and climate change department, Anand Kumar on Tuesday emphasized that protecting the ozone layer is not just the responsibility of scientists but a collective public duty.
Addressing an event held to mark World Ozone Day at RIC in Jaipur, Kumar said India Cooling Action Plan, launched in 2019, is the world's first to integrate cooling needs with energy efficiency, ozone protection, and climate policy. The plan aims to reduce refrigerant demand by 20-30% by 2037-38 and train over one lakh technicians.
He noted that this year's theme "Global Action through Science" reflects how scientific warnings have been translated into concrete global policies, such as the 1987 Montreal Protocol that phased out ozone-depleting substances like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
He also cited India's "Panchamrit" commitments announced at COP-26, including achieving 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, meeting 50% of energy needs from renewables, reducing carbon emissions by one billion tonnes, cutting carbon intensity by 45%, and reaching net-zero emissions by 2070.
Kumar further stressed the importance of Mission LiFE, a campaign launched by the Central Pollution Control Board to encourage sustainable and eco-conscious lifestyles. He said it is a global movement promoting positive behavioral change, with initiatives like "Pro-Planet People" networks inspiring communities to adopt greener practices.
Principal chief conservator of forests, Pawan Kumar Upadhyay, also underlined the ozone layer's significance and added that under the Hariyalo Rajasthan Mahabhiyan, more than 11 crore saplings have been planted this year....
