panchayat polls: BJP finalises first list of nominees in 16 districts
Jaipur, Oct. 13 -- The Rajasthan BJP on Monday finalised its nominees for the first phase of the Panchayati Raj elections across 16 districts in the presence of chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and state party president Madan Rathore, concluding a three-day candidate-selection exercise, people aware of the matter said.
The party decided to send authorisation documents for contesting on its symbol directly to the respective election in-charges instead of handing them to candidates, the sources said, adding that the arrangement was intended to prevent disputes over ticket distribution.
Monday's deliberations covered Bikaner, Kota, Jhalawar and Alwar. Some pending nominations from Jaipur Rural were also cleared, completing the selection process for all 16 districts covered by the first phase.
The first phase covers 104 panchayat samitis and 3,314 gram panchayats.
Voting for zila parishad and panchayat samiti members will take place on October 22, while voters will elect village heads and ward members in the gram panchayats on October 24.
The BJP's decisions came a day before the nomination deadline.
Under the State Election Commission's schedule, filing of nominations began on October 8 and will close at 3pm on Tuesday, October 13.
Scrutiny will take place on October 14, followed by withdrawals until 3pm on October 15....
