Jaipur, Oct. 7 -- The ICU fire at Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital has triggered sharp criticism from the Congress, with former CM Ashok Gehlot and LoP Tika Ram Jully blaming the Bhajanlal Sharma government for negligence and insensitivity. The party has also demanded the resignation of health minister Gajendra Singh and immediate compensation for victims' families. Visiting the trauma centre on Monday, Gehlot met the families of the deceased and accused the government of failing to reach out to them. He demanded a judicial probe into the incident and alleged that hospital staff abandoned patients during the short circuit. "This was an incident that could have been averted," Gehlot said, warning that the death toll, officially placed between six and eight, may be higher as information on some patients is being withheld. Gehlot also drew attention to broader issues in the health sector, including the continued use of cough syrups banned in other states, and criticized what he called a "cosmetic cleanup" of the hospital ahead of the chief minister's visit. "Three days ago the hospital was in a terrible state. Today it looks spotless just because the chief minister is here. Is cleanliness not for the common man?" he asked. Rejecting suggestions that the tragedy should not be politicized, he said: "How can we remain silent when people are dying?" Echoing Gehlot's criticism, LoP Tika Ram Jully said the fire was the result of "gross negligence and zero monitoring." He accused the chief minister of prioritizing Delhi tours and political events, including a fortnight-long celebration for the Prime Minister's birthday, over people's lives.
