JODHPUR, July 24 -- The National Green Tribunal (NGT) strongly criticised Rajasthan authorities over their handling of alleged pollution and encroachments at Chandlai Lake, a notified wetland near Jaipur, observing that officials appeared to act only after it reached the courts. The Tribunal ordered the Jaipur Municipal Commissioner, Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) and Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board (RSPCB) to remove encroachments, stop the discharge of untreated water into the lake and prevent dumping of waste. The matter will be heard again on August 4. A bench of justice Sheo Kumar Singh and Expert Member Sudhir Kumar Chaturvedi was hearing a petition on Wednesday alleging violations of the Water Act, Wetland Rules and Solid Waste Management Rules. A Joint Committee found encroachments in the catchment area of Chandlai Dam, discharge of storm water, treated sewage and wastewater from textile clusters into the lake and confirmed that the lake water was polluted. It also reported that most textile units in the Sanganer area were operating without approvals. The State informed the Tribunal nearly 1,300 industrial units were in the area and notices were being issued to violators, while JDA said some encroachments had been removed. It also directed the State and the RSPCB to file a detailed report on waste generation, treatment capacity, the gap in treatment infrastructure and an action plan for managing waste beyond existing capacity before the next hearing....
