Jaipur, May 3 -- A 20-year-old aspirant, preparing for the National Entrance Eligibility Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG), died by falling from the fourth floor of his hostel building in Rajasthan's Kota district on Saturday morning, a day before the national-level medical entrance exam, police said. "Prima facie, he fell from a balcony on the fourth floor of the building. However, we are yet not sure whether it was only an accident or he died by suicide. We are probing the matter," said Devesh Bharadwaj, the station house officer (SHO) at Kunhadi Police Station. The student is a resident of Uttarakhand's Almora and had been preparing for NEET-UG at a reputed coaching centre in Kota for the last two years, police said. As police are ascertaining the cause of death, the SHO cited hostel officials, saying that they "believe the aspirant lost balance and fell from the balcony of his hostel room". "His hostel is located in Kunhadi. He was all set to take the exam on Sunday. The hostel staff said he woke up around 6.30am on Saturday and went to the balcony to study. However, they believe that he suddenly lost his balance and fell from the balcony," Bhardwaj said. The aspirant was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead, police said. "The body has been sent for an autopsy. We have informed his parents and they will reach by Sunday morning. We are also questioning the hostel staff and the students if he had any unusual behaviour for the last few days. We are also analysing the CCTV footage to confirm whether he committed suicide or it was an accident," Bharadwaj said, adding that no case has yet been lodged. "Police are examining the building and its construction if there is any violation of the norms. Further probe is underway," the SHO said. Saturday's incident is this year's third death of an aspirant attending classes in coaching centres in Kota, including 17-year-old and 24-year-old aspirants, who died by suicide on January 26 and February 24, respectively. Last year, at least 18 students died by suicide in Kota along with one each in Sikar and Jodhpur while another 20 students also died in Kota in 2024....
