NEET aspirant dies by suicide in Sikar, family blames cancellation
Jaipur, May 17 -- A 23-year-old student in Rajasthan's Sikar district, who appeared in the National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET) on May 3, has died by suicide, days after the exam was cancelled over an alleged question paper leak, police said on Saturday.
According to the police, the student, a resident of Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district, arrived in Sikar three years ago to prepare for NEET to secure an admission to a medical college. On Friday, he died by suicide when one of his sisters went outside and another went to bathe, police said.
Sikar circle DSP Sandeep Singh said, "It is possible that the student was either depressed over his performance in the exam or was stressed after getting the news of that the cancellation due to paper leak. The facts are yet to be ascertained. On Friday, he hung himself at his rented accommodation."
"He came to Sikar with his two sisters. They had also been preparing for NEET in two different coaching centres. The three siblings also shifted to this new rented accommodation in Udhyog Nagar only a year ago. He also took admission to a new coaching centre in July last year," said Singh.
"Once the sisters found his body, they screamed for help. The landlord and other neighbours rushed him to a hospital where he was declared dead."
Police also said that he appeared for the exam on May 3. "It was his third attempt. Prima facie, his family members said that he was happy about the exam. His father is a labourer in Jhunjhunu and took a huge loan to make his children doctors. We have not found any suicide note as of now. But we are probing whether he took the extreme step due to the cancellation. We will also question his friends and coaching staff about any change in his behaviour in the last few days. We have also requested his performance record from the coaching centre." Police said that the body has been sent for an autopsy.
His father, who arrived in Sikar on Saturday, said: "His test went really well. He said that he may score over 650 this time. It was his third attempt. He was really hopeful. But the exam cancellation shattered him. He got too depressed after the news."
A teacher from the coaching centre said the victim had not come to the centre since the exam. "He was very irregular. His performance in our tests was also not at par. But since the paper was easier this time, many hoped that they would be able to crack it..."...
