NCRB data shows state cyber crime cases up 62% in 2023 over two years
Jaipur, Oct. 2 -- Rajasthan has seen a significant 62% hike in cyber crime cases in two years, showed the NCRB's latest crime report for 2023.
According to the data, the state had 2,435 cases in 2023 which was 1,835 in 2022 and 1,504 in 2021.
The state also ranked eighth in the country in 2023 in cyber crime cases after Karnataka with 21,889 cases, Telangana with 18,236 cases, Uttar Pradesh with 10,794 cases, Maharashtra with 8,104 cases, Bihar with 4,450 cases, Tamil Nadu with 4,121 cases, and Kerala with 3,295 cases.
However, the immediate charge sheeting rate has increased in cyber crimes across the state over the years. While it was only 30% in 2021 with 713 cases also waiting for a probe, the figure rose to 40.5% in 2022 with 542 cases pending for an investigation, and 50% in 2023 when 711 cases are also pending for an investigation.
Further classification of data also showed that the majority of these cyber crime cases are of online fraud and attempt to malign women's modesty. NCRB data showed that a total 1,102 of the total cases lodged this year are of fraud including 16 banking fraud, 7 credit card or debit card related forgery, and 36 financial fraud using OTP.
There are also 134 cases that have been registered for extortion, and 34 other cases are of blackmailing and threatening aiming to take any personal revenge.
At least 500 cases were registered for putting up sexually explicit content of women to malign reputation and modesty, showed data, while 49 others were also for sharing obscene material.
In a total of 97 cases, digital platforms were used to bully or stalk women and minor girls.
In response to this rise, the police, particularly in the Bharatpur range (under which Deeg comes) - have launched a special mission Operation Anti Virus in 2024 to regularly keep a check on the cyber crime cases.
The additional SP of Deeg, Aklesh Sharma, said, "The maximum number of the cases this year was lodged by the Bharatpur range police in suo motu action. Most of the cases are usually not registered despite the range - majorly the Mewat region including Deeg - being the hotbed of cyber fraud in the country. Many cases are also registered in different states where a person might have been cheated by fraudsters from Deeg."
The special police teams of the Anti Virus mission in February prepared a list of phone numbers that were already used in any fraud case and was also reported to the police.
A special war room was also set up in the districts to regularly track those numbers and also the IMEI numbers of the mobile phones in which those SIM cards were inserted.
In view of the rising online fraud cases, which are majorly financial cheating, the state police, meanwhile, on Tuesday has also issued an advisory.
The police superintendent of the state cyber crime unit of Rajasthan police, Shantanu Singh, said, "The cyber frauds are using innovative techniques every day to trap wealthy or socially reputed people asking them to invest in some fraud websites for which the victims would get extremely high return. The advisory was issued for the public's awareness."
The advisory asked people not to click on any link sent by unknown contacts, not to respond to any message that threatens to block the bank accounts if they don't invest money.
It has also alerted them about forged screenshots showing real-time transaction details or any deep-fake content which is suspicious.
"People must immediately complain to the local police station or register a complaint through the https://cybercrime.gov.in immediately."...
