Barmer/Balotra, June 8 -- A mother and her teenage daughter drowned in a water tank following an argument over a mobile phone in Balotra district on Saturday, police said. The incident happened in Seelu village, under Gudamalani police station limits, police added. According to preliminary information, the 38-year-old mother was at home with her family when her 18-year-old elder daughter asked for the mobile phone. The mother told her younger children were sleeping in the house and that she would give the phone later in the evening. "Upset by the refusal, the daughter allegedly sat beside a diggi [water tank] near the house. After some time, the mother told other family members that her daughter was distressed and went to speak to her near the tank. During the conversation, the daughter suddenly jumped into the water tank," a police officer said. Seeing her daughter in danger, her mother immediately jumped in to rescue her but because the water was deep, both were unable to get out and drowned, the officer added. "Goat herders nearby heard cries for help and alerted villagers and family members. Locals pulled the mother and daughter from the tank, but both were already dead," he said....
