Jaipur, Sept. 16 -- With civic poll results settling the numbers in several municipal corporations, intense lobbying for the mayor's post has begun. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress leaders are weighing caste equations, organisational loyalty, community representation and the influence of senior leaders before finalising their candidates. The contest is particularly keen in Jaipur, Udaipur, Kota, and Bikaner, where the broad contours of the next boards have emerged. In Ajmer, Jodhpur and Bharatpur, however, the mayoral race will depend first on post-poll negotiations, with independents likely to play a decisive role. In Jaipur, with chief minister Bhajanlal Sharma and Jaipur MP Manju Sharma representing the Brahmin community, and deputy chief minister Diya Kumari representing the Rajput community, party leaders are exploring a Vaishya candidate for the mayor's post. Sunil Kothari, incumbent deputy mayor Puneet Karnawat, Vimal Agrawal and Subhash Chandra Singhi are among the names in circulation. A non-councillor Vaishya candidate could also be considered if the party opts for a hybrid model. In Udaipur, where the BJP won 53 of 80 seats, Pramod Samar and former district president Dinesh Bhatt are among the prominent contenders. Atul Chandalia is another name being discussed. The party is weighing Jain and Brahmin representation amid existing organisational and political equations. Kota's mayoral post is reserved for an OBC woman, with Anusuya Goswami and Seema Chaudhary emerging as the main contenders. Both are considered close to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla's camp, making his preference potentially significant. In Bhilwara, where BJP won 45 of 70 seats, Suman Ojha and Purnima Jain are leading contenders for the general-category women's post. In Bikaner, the Congress has a clear majority, with Anil Kalla, nephew of former minister BD Kalla, considered a frontrunner. Ajmer and Jodhpur are also headed for intense negotiations. Congress has 37 of Ajmer's 80 seats against BJP's 32, while Jodhpur has produced a near-deadlock, with BJP and Congress winning 44 seats each in the 100-member corporation.
