Madrasa student dies cleaning septic tank
Bharatpur, July 19 -- A 16-year-old girl died and 11 others were injured after they fell into a septic tank while allegedly cleaning it on the campus of a madrasa in Rajasthan's Deeg district, police said on Saturday.
The incident occurred on Friday evening at a madrasa under the Gopalgarh police station area, located on the Bharatpur-Pahari State Mega Highway.
According to superintendent of police Kamble Gopinath Sharan around 1,500 girls and 2,000 boys reside in separate hostels on the madrasa campus.
Police said 12 girls were allegedly asked to clean an open septic tank located behind the girls' hostel. The girls were using a wooden ladder to access the tank when it broke, causing all 12 girls and a male staff member to fall into the tank. The girls were between 15 and 18 years old.
They were rescued and rushed to the Sikri Community Health Centre, where a 16-year-old girl, Rohin, from Haryana was declared dead. The remaining 11 girls and the staff member were referred to a hospital in Alwar for treatment. All the injured girls were discharged from the Alwar hospital on Saturday evening, Sharan said.
The Deeg superintendent of police and the district collector visited the spot to assess the situation.
Gopalgarh police have registered a case against the madrasa management, including its directors for alleged negligence under Sections 106, 125, 125A and 146 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act.
Police alleged that the hostel girls did not have adequate safety equipment. According to police, the victims were exposed to poisonous gases inside the septic tank, which may have contributed to the incident.
After the post-mortem examination, the body of the deceased was handed over to her family....
