Haridwar, Aug. 13 -- With 48 million kanwariyas visiting Haridwar during the recently concluded Shravan Kanwar fair, around 7,000 tonnes of garbage has been left by the devotees in the city, civic officials said on Wednesday. Officials said the garbage, including discarded clothes, old bamboo kanwars and plastic and polythene waste has been left at Ganga ghats, markets, highways and parking lots across Haridwar. "During the last two days of the Dak Kanwar, when more than one crore kanwariyas arrived in Haridwar, approximately 7,000 tonnes of garbage was generated during the two weeks of Kanwar yatra. It is being cleared since Tuesday evening," said municipal commissioner Nandan Kumar. Officials said over 1,000 sanitation personnel and 100 contractual workers have been deployed by civic body. "It is vital that locals, the saints, religious organisations, and traders also participate in the drive. Therefore, a mass cleanliness drive has been initiated from Wednesday till August 18," said chief development officer Lalit Narayan Mishra....
