Bikaner, May 3 -- The state health department and police have begun a joint probe after a 33-year-old woman accused a private hospital in Bikaner of removing her kidney without consent during a tubectomy in 2024. The matter arose after Radha Devi Bhat underwent a sonography on April 17 after complaining of abdominal pain. The report said that her right kidney "was not seen", although the other appeared normal. A repeated scan showed the same result, she claimed. Following a written complaint by her husband, Fakeeraram, Bikaner superintendent of police Mridul Kachhawa ordered an inquiry and assigned it to additional superintendent of police (city) Chakravarti Singh. The complaint alleged that the hospital management misled the couple into consenting to the sterilisation procedure and removed the kidney without their knowledge. The family has sought strict action against those responsible. However, a CT scan conducted as part of the health department's inquiry pointed to a different explanation. Joint director of the medical and health department Devendra Kumar Choudhary said the imaging indicated the woman has a single enlarged kidney-consistent with a congenital condition in which a person is born with only one kidney that enlarges over time to compensate. He added that removal of a kidney requires a major procedure involving a long incision from the abdomen to the back, and no such surgical marks or stitches were found. He also noted that sterilisation was carried out in a camp setting and involves only a minor incision, making the alleged removal medically unlikely. "The CT scan has largely clarified the situation, though further processes are required to establish the complete truth," he added. The hospital has denied the allegations. Chief executive officer Pawan Choudhary said the tubectomy lasted only five to ten minutes and the patient was discharged within about two hours. "It is medically impossible to remove a kidney through the small incision used in a tubectomy. The claim appears intended to damage the institution's reputation," he said. Additional SP Chakravarti Singh said police are examining hospital records, operation-related documents and medical reports....
