Jaipur, Sept. 20 -- The dead bodies of two patients at a private hospital in Jaipur were exchanged by mistake on Saturday, spurring a protest by one of the families involved, police said, ACP Shivdayal Bajiya said, "Girdhari Lal, 53, a resident of Nawan in Didwana-Kuchaman district, and Ghesa Lal, a resident of Bansur in Kotputli-Behror district, were admitted to the hospital on September 17 and died on Friday night", He added that on Saturday morning, hospital staff allegedly handed over Ghesa Lal's body to Girdhari Lal's family, which then left for Nawan in an ambulance. The error was discovered later, following which hospital officials called the family and asked them to return. Jawahar Circle SHO Mahesh Chand said the family had travelled around 20 kilometres before receiving the call. It returned to the hospital , after which the bodies were handed over to the respective families. Angered by the alleged negligence, Girdhari Lal's relatives staged a protest outside the hospital for nearly two hours. The family alleged that the police initially refused to register its complaint. Personnel from Jawahar Circle police station reached the spot and attempted to pacify the protesters. An FIR was subsequently registered following Nagaur MP Hanuman Beniwal's intervention, and a probe was initiated. Rajveer Singh, spokesperson for the Hospital Nursing Society, said hospitals follow a prescribed procedure while releasing bodies. The ambulance waiting at the hospital gate was meant to transport Girdhari Lal's body to Nawan, but the other patient's body was handed over to the family by mistake, he said, adding that the error could have occurred due to negligence by a Class IV employee, the ambulance driver or the family.
