JAIPUR/BHARATPUR/AJMER, Sept. 6 -- Continuous rain battered several parts of Rajasthan for more than two days following a fresh revival of the monsoon, disrupting road connectivity, swelling rivers and dams, and prompting authorities to close schools in several districts. Bharatpur, Sawai Madhopur, Dausa, Alwar, Jhalawar, Ajmer and Jaipur were among the areas affected. In Jaipur, rain that began on Friday morning continued until Saturday evening. It was the first time during this monsoon season that the state capital witnessed rain for two consecutive days. Temperatures fell by up to seven degrees Celsius. Schools were closed in Jhalawar, Karauli, Sawai Madhopur and Dholpur districts following warnings of heavy rain. In Sawai Madhopur, several rivers, streams and waterfalls, particularly in and around Ranthambore, were in spate. Mansarovar Dam overflowed after filling to capacity, while the strong current in Jhareti Nala cut off several villages from the district headquarters. Several villages in the Kundera and Shyampura areas also lost road connectivity because of overflowing streams. Amid an orange alert, the district administration advised people to stay away from rivers, streams and waterfalls. Sawai Madhopur district collector Kanaram declared a holiday for all government and private schools and anganwadi centres on Saturday as a precautionary measure. According to the meteorological department, the district recorded an average rainfall of 76.3 mm during the previous 24 hours. Waterfalls at Jhojheshwar, Amareshwar, Sita Mata and Kel Kund in Ranthambore were also in spate. Forest department teams were deployed at vulnerable locations. In Dausa, several roads were submerged, making it difficult for residents to travel. Baijupada recorded 80 mm of rainfall, while several other areas received more than 50 mm during the previous 24 hours, according to the irrigation department. Heavy rain filled Morel Dam to capacity, while Radia Dam was nearing its full storage level. Rain also continued in Dholpur and several parts of Bharatpur district. The Dholpur district collector ordered the closure of all government and private schools on Saturday because of the weather conditions. In Ajmer, rain that began around midnight on Friday continued intermittently until Saturday afternoon. A wall of Arya Putri School near Plaza Cinema collapsed during the rainfall, damaging cars parked nearby. No casualties were reported. The district witnessed a fall of about 4.5 to six degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures during the previous 24 hours. The minimum temperature on Saturday morning was recorded at 20.8 degrees Celsius. Ajmer district has received 443 mm of rainfall so far this season, against the average of 390 mm. However, the cumulative rainfall remains lower than that recorded during the corresponding period last year. The meteorological department has forecast light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms at several places in Ajmer district over the next two days. Light to moderate rain is expected to continue in parts of the Bharatpur, Jaipur and Kota divisions on September 6 and 7.
