HC grants bail to former MLA in PMLA case
Jaipur, Nov. 5 -- The Rajasthan high court on Wednesday granted bail to former Behror MLA Baljeet Yadav, who is in judicial custody in connection with alleged irregularities in the use of the MLA Local Area Development (LAD) fund and a money laundering case involving about Rs.3.72 crore.
A bench of justice Ravi Chirania allowed Yadav's second bail application and ordered his release on bail. Advocate Chitransh Saxena appeared for Yadav. The court had reserved its order after concluding the hearing on October 29.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Yadav on February 3 in connection with the case. He was later produced before a special court in Jaipur on February 7 and sent to judicial custody.
Yadav was an independent MLA from Behror from 2018 to 2023. Investigators have alleged that sports kits, including badminton and cricket equipment, were purchased for 32 government schools in his constituency during his tenure at prices two-and-a-half to three times higher than their actual cost, causing an alleged loss of Rs.3.72 crore to the government. The firms involved in the tenders are also accused of using forged documents.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) registered a corruption case against Yadav on December 12, 2024. ED later filed a prosecution complaint and began investigating the alleged money laundering. Yadav's first bail application was rejected by the high court. He challenged that decision in the Supreme Court, which rejected his special leave petition but directed that the trial be expedited. After the trial court framed charges, Yadav filed his second bail application.
Arguing for bail, Saxena told the court, "The ED has filed a supplementary charge sheet in the case, and the trial court has framed charges. The petitioner has been in jail for a long time, and no further investigation is required from him..."
Opposing, the Centre told the court, "The trial is underway. Granting bail to the accused is likely to affect trial. This is a serious money laundering case."...
