JODHPUR, Aug. 7 -- The Rajasthan high court on Thursday disposed of the last pending murder reference at its principal bench in Jodhpur by commuting a death sentence to imprisonment for the remainder of the convict's natural life, bringing the pendency of murder references at the bench down to zero. The verdict was delivered by a division bench of justices Vinit Kumar Mathur and Chandra Shekhar Sharma. Until April this year, ten murder references, legally known as death sentence confirmation cases, were pending before the principal bench. Through continuous hearings, the bench decided all of them, delivering the first judgment on April 7 and the final one on Thursday, a court official familiar with the matter claimed. A death sentence awarded by a Sessions Court cannot be executed unless it is confirmed by the high court. This confirmation proceeding is known as a murder reference.
