Jaipur/Udaipur, Aug. 2 -- The state's Gurjar community has objected to an allegedly misleading depiction of Panna Dhay, the legendary foster mother of Maharana Udai Singh of Mewar, as belonging to a Rajput clan. The legend of Panna Dhay revolves around her sacrificing her own son to save Maharana Udai Singh from an assassination plot. The controversy centres on the eight edition of Bharat Ke Nari Ratna, published in 2022 by the Publications Division of the Centre. A representative of the Gurjar Samaj Seva Samiti claimed that the book identifies Panna Dhay as a "Kheechi Rajput clan woman." The Samiti claims that Panna Dhay belonged to the Gurjar community and accused the book of distorting history. On July 31, a delegation representing various regions under the banner of the Gurjar Samaj Seva Samiti, Udaipur, met district officials to register its protest. In the absence of district collector Gaurav Agarwal, the delegation submitted a memorandum to Girwa Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Avul Saikrishna.
